Central Wisconsin’s 2021 Winter Guide

From hiking up Rib Mountain to playing at the Children’s Museum. There is something for all families to do this winter. Check out our on going list of Central Wisconsin’s Winter Guide for Family Fun 2021!


1. Grab a sled and a friend and head on over to Iverson Park in Stevens Point where they have 3 sled and saucer runs OR check out some local hills in your area, here (FREE)

2. Try cross country skiing or snowshoeing at Nine Mile in Wausau. For the younger ones that may need an incentive, have them try the Cookie Trail! ($)

3. Explore Schmeekcle Reserve in Stevens Point, where you can enjoy walking the trails (FREE) or even rent out winter gear, snowshoes or cross country skies ($)

4. Try downhill skiing at the largest ski hill in the state! Granite Peak (Wausau) has over 400 acres and over 75 runs ($)

5. Explore a new to you park or playground! There are so many great parks in Central Wisconsin. If you need a suggestion, K.A.S.H. in Stevens Point and JoJo’s Jungle in Wausau are two of our favorites and two of the biggest parks in the area! (FREE)

6. If you like speed, check out one of the tubing hills in the area. Sylvin Hill in Wausau, Powers Bluff in Arpin, Perkinstown in Medford and Bruce Mound in Merrillan are all now open for the season!($)

7. Enjoy a fun family walk through Monk Botanical Gardens in Wausau. Make sure to check out the tree house-a kid favorite (FREE-donations appreciated). Check out their upcoming events including a luminary walk for families.($)

8. Spend an afternoon at Wildwood Zoo in Marshfield, watch the animals play while you explore. (FREE-donations appreciated)

9. With so many places to choose from in Central WI, try ice fishing at your favorite spot or join the Wausau Noon Optimist Clubfor their Youth Fisheree on February 14th.(FREE)

10. Check out the Sled Dog Races in Merrill on February 6th & 7th. Watch the teams as they compete for first place!

11. Take in a hockey game while watching the Wausau RiverWolves. Limited tickets are available-check for dates online. ($)

12. Take advantage of the cold temperatures by skating on one of the park department made outdoor ice rinks. There are many to choose from right here in Central Wisconsin. (FREE)

13. Make new memories by bundling everyone up and going for a sleigh ride. Many places offer an outdoor campfire and hot cocoa to warm up! ($)

14. Pullout your phone and go on a family scavenger hunt with GeoCashing. Explore some pretty neat cashes with the extra challenge of digging through the snow! (FREE)

16. Watch snowmobiles compete for first place at the Wausau 525 event on January 23rd-24th ($)

17. Have you checked out Willow Springs Garden in Wausau in the winter time? They have many events coming up: Sleigh Rides, Balloon Glow, Dog Races, Antique shows and more! ($)

18. Hike up Rib Mountain and discover some really fun trails and don’t forget to check out the Quarry in Wausau (FREE)


19. Make an appointment at the Stevens Point Children’s Museum for some serious play time!($)

20. Ignite your creative side and make something crafty at Clay Corner in Wausau. ($)

21. Wishing it was warm out? Maybe you need it to feel like summer is here? Check out the Grand Lodge + Waterpark in Wausau for a splash of a time!($)

22. Get your family together for some friendly competition. Check out one of the many bowling allies in the area! ($)

23. Roller skate the day away at one of Central Wisconsin’s roller skating rinks, Melody Gardens in Marshfield or Skate City in Wisconsin Rapids.

24. Is it too cold for your kids to run around outside? Have them run around at Rainbow Play Systems in Wausau where they have multiply play structures up! ($)

25. Warm up your golf arm for summer time by playing a round or two of mini golf at Putt-N-Play in their indoor building in Stevens Point.($)

26. Check out our two local Winter Farmer’s Markets in the area including Wausau and Stevens Point for your produce, fresh meat and eggs, delicious baked goods, canned jellies and more!(FREE admission)

27. If your kids like arcade games-they will love WOW (Wausau on the Water) in Wausau where they are can play their hearts out! ($)

28. If you are looking for some projects to do at home, there are multiple places in Central Wisconsin that offer FREE grab and go kits for families to complete at home. Some of these places include: Lowes, Home Depot, Leigh Yawkey Museum and many local Libraries.
